Hands-on Publisher and Editor-In-Chief, Elspeth Tavares has considerable experience in consumer, trade magazines and national newspapers.
Since the 70’s, her publishing experience, her business efforts and expertise have been concentrated in the international film industry.
Responsible for the day to day running of Screen International between 1975 and 1980, Tavares is credited in that period for the company's restructuring and expansion which saw the reversal of its loss-making trend into a highly profitable enterprise, acquired by International Thomsons for a figure in excess of £8m.
The Business Of Film, in the first decade operated a trainee journalist scheme for Oxford and Cambridge graduates whereby it recruited bright youngsters (with an interest in the audio-visual field) to train in its Editorial Programme. Successful applicants underwent a six month intensive training period after which they are employed on a two-year contract. In this way, the company believed the editorial staff were given the grounding and opportunity to understand and appreciate the complexities of the international film industry.
